How do you upgrade tools in Harvest Moon: Light of Hope? If you’ve been wondering about this while playing, you’re not alone - it’s an important part of progressing in the game.
Upgrading your tools greatly improves their performance. For example, a basic hoe can only till 1 square of land at a time. After upgrading, it can till 3 to 15 squares at once by holding down the action button.
Another example is the hammer - at first, it can only break small rocks, but once upgraded, it can smash larger and tougher ones with ease.
In short, tool upgrades make your farming, mining, and other daily activities much easier and faster.
Each type of upgrade requires specific materials, some of which are unique to that tool, while others overlap. In the next section, I’ll explain the required materials for each upgrade and how you can find them.
How to Upgrade Tools in Harvest Moon: Light of Hope
To do that, you first need to repair the mine and Gus's Smithy. Once repaired, you can upgrade your tools at Gus's Smithy.

How to Get the Materials for Tool Upgrades
When I first started playing, I knew how to upgrade tools, but I had no idea where to find some of the required items.
Take the material called Cosmos for example — what is that?
Many players might assume Cosmos is some kind of ore, but surprisingly, it’s not.
It turns out that Cosmos is actually a type of flower.
To upgrade most tools (except the Fishing Rod), you’ll need a mix of ores and flowers. The ores can be mined from various locations, then refined into metal with the help of Gus at the Smithy.
How to Get Cosmos and Other Flowers for Upgrades
Keep in mind that not all shop items are available right away. Their availability depends on your game progress.

After purchasing the seeds, plant them according to their growing season. If you want to grow them out of season, you’ll need to use fertilizer to prevent them from withering.
You can buy both flower seeds and fertilizer directly from Carol.
Flowers can also be found in nature during their growing season and picked for free. For example, Sunflowers grow in Summer, while Cosmos blooms in Fall.
