Crops and Crop Mutations - Harvest Moon: Light of Hope Guide

Harvest Moon: Light of Hope Special Edition Cheats, Tips, and Guide to get all Crop Mutations. Applicable on Switch, PS4, PC, and Mobile version.

This page is part of the Harvest Moon: Light of Hope Guide. Here, we'll delve into all aspects of crops and crop mutations.

Farming is a fundamental activity in Harvest Moon games, and as the main character, it becomes your responsibility.

The basic concept of farming in this game is influenced by various factors, such as season, weather, terrain, fertilizer, and more.

Crops and Crop Mutations - Harvest Moon: Light of Hope

If you aspire to become a great farmer in Harvest Moon: Light of Hope, it's crucial to understand the explanations and effects of the aforementioned factors on your plant growth.

For those currently reading this article, you're on the right track. By learning about these aspects, you're taking the necessary steps to become a successful farmer in the game.

How to Plant Crops

The process is explained in the tutorial with Jeanne, but I'll include it here to ensure the guide is comprehensive.

To plant crops:

  1. Use the Hoe to till the ground.
  2. Select the seed you want to plant.
  3. Water the planted seeds with the Watering Can.
  4. Apply fertilizer to the crops.

All these actions can be performed with just one click, and the sequence is tilling > planting > watering > fertilizing > harvesting.

Weather

There are 7 types of weather in Harvest Moon: Light of Hope, including extreme weather conditions like blizzards that can harm your crops.

Terrains/Types of soil

In Harvest Moon: Light of Hope, there are 4 different types of soil for planting crops:

  • Grassy land: Found on the farm near your house.
  • Patchy: Less fertile soil with a mix of grass and dirt, typically located in the lower mountain areas.
  • Dry: Harsh soil found at the mountain's summit.
  • Swampy: Soil characterized by constant moisture, located in the eastern beach area.

This soil-based planting system may be unfamiliar to players accustomed to the Marvelous-developed Harvest Moon series, as it was introduced in the Natsume-developed games.

How to Get Crop Seeds

You can purchase vegetable and tree seeds from Sam, while flower seeds are available for purchase from Carol.

It's important to note that not all crop seeds will be immediately available at Sam's and Carol's shops. Many seeds will become available as you progress through the main storyline, and some will be accessible only during specific growing seasons.

Increasing your friendships with Carol, Dean, and Sam, as well as completing their requests, can also unlock new seeds.

To unlock mutated crop seeds, you must sell the mutated crops to Sam or Carol in certain quantities, typically starting from 10 pieces but possibly increasing to 20, 30, or even 50 items.

When purchasing crop seeds, it's advisable to refer to the listed table information to determine the suitable season and terrain for growing each crop.

Basic Concept of Crop Mutation

Mutation in crops refers to a genetic change caused by various factors, resulting in the development of new genetic characteristics and the emergence of new variations within plant species.

In Harvest Moon: Light of Hope, crops undergo random mutations influenced by factors such as season, terrain, and fertilizer (blend) when they are planted.

Using specific blends of fertilizer can increase the likelihood of mutations occurring in particular crops. For example, if you wish to mutate Celery into Mystic Herb, you can use Celery Blend to enhance the chances of a successful mutation.

Mutations are evident through changes in the shape and color of the crops compared to their original species.

How to Improve the Quality of the Crops

You can obtain "Great" crops, which fetch a higher price when sold compared to normal crops.

Enhancing the quality of crops is separate from mutation, as mutated crops can also have a "Great" quality.

Improving crop quality is straightforward; simply grow them during their optimal season and apply fertilizer. Upon harvesting, you'll notice the improved quality of the crops.

In addition to enhancing crop quality, fertilizer enables you to grow crops outside their usual growing season.

How to Know the Condition of the Crops

To assess the condition of your plants and determine if they will thrive, produce better quality, or perish, pay attention to the bubbles that appear as you approach your crops.

- A blue bubble indicates that the crop is weak, likely due to being grown out of season, and requires fertilizer.

If left untreated, the water in the bubble will continue to decrease, leading to the death of your crops.

- A white bubble signifies that the crop is in a normal condition.

- A gold bubble indicates that the crop is in excellent condition and has a high chance of producing "great" quality crops or undergoing mutations.

This condition occurs when crops are planted in the right season and soil, and when they receive regular fertilization or blends.

Flowers

Different types of flowers can thrive in various seasons throughout the year in Harvest Moon: Light of Hope.

Flowers like Tulips, Dahlias, Cosmos, Carnations, and Pansies have the potential to mutate into flowers with new color variations.

Unlike crops, flowers do not require specific fertilizers to increase the probability of mutation. Simply plant them in the correct season and wait for them to fully mature.

While mutation results are as random as with crops, mutating flowers is generally easier.

Here's a comprehensive list of flowers and their potential mutations:

Flower Season Growth time Base crop
Pink Rose Spring 12 days
White Rose Fall 12 days
Blue Rose Winter 12 days
Red Rose Summer 12 days
Carnation Winter 8 days

Fruit trees

When planting trees, it's essential to provide them with sufficient space for optimal growth.

Ensure there is at least one plot of distance between each tree. Additionally, if weeds grow around the trees, they should be removed.

Trees can be planted in any season, but they will only bear fruit during the appropriate season, and they cannot undergo mutation.

Here's the complete list of fruit trees:

Fruit Growth Time Bear Season
Apple 28 days Fall
Grapefruit 28 days Spring
Orange 28 days Winter
Peach 28 days Summer

Just to let you all know. For some mutations to occur the pattern you plant the crops matters. Sometimes it needs to be checkerboard and other times in rows. Also sometimes certain plants being next to it can help
